This patient had open upper abdominal surgery 30 years back for Peptic Ulcer Disease. There was a long upper abdominal scar. Owing to his past experience of open surgery with prolonged recovery patient was not keen for surgery this time. This patient was adequately counselled and informed about minimal invasive approach of oncosurgery which can be done using smaller incisions. Laparoscopy & Robotic surgery are the minimal invasive modalities used in cancer surgery where surgery is done with same oncological principles as in open technique but with very small incisions. Compared to open surgery, minimally invasive surgical techniques can provide benefits in the form of reduced blood loss, faster recovery, less pain, less wound-related complications and a reduced hospital stay for the patient. For rectal cancer specifically,  the robot allows for a finer dissection of the rectum out of the tight space where it is located.
